Mathematics and Monuments Conservation: Free Boundary Models of Marble Sulphation
نویسندگان
چکیده
A. We introduce some free boundary problems which describe the evolution of calcium carbonate stones under the attack of atmospheric SO2, taking into account both swelling of the external gypsum layer and the influence of humidity. Different behaviors are described according to the relative humidity of the environment, and in all cases reliable explicit quasi steady approximations are introduced under reasonable assumptions on the data. Some numerical simulations are also performed to describe gypsum formation using experimental data, which show a good agreement with the quasi steady solutions. The influence of the cleaning the crust and of the change in concentration of pollution is evaluated and discussed.

Preconditioned fully implicit PDE solvers for monument conservation
Mathematical models for the description, in a quantitative way, of the damages induced on the monuments by the action of specific pollutants are often systems of nonlinear, possibly degenerate, parabolic equations. Although some the asymptotic properties of the solutions are known, for a short window of time, one needs a numerical approximation scheme in order to have a quantitative forecast at...

متن کاملBiodiversity of cyanobacteria and green algae on monuments in the Mediterranean Basin: an overview.
The presence and deteriorating action of micro-organisms on monuments and stone works of art have received considerable attention in the last few years. Knowledge of the microbial populations living on stone materials is the starting point for successful conservation treatment and control. This paper reviews the literature on cyanobacteria and chlorophyta that cause deterioration of stone cultu...
متن کاملWave Propagation at the Boundary Surface of Inviscid Fluid Half-Space and Thermoelastic Diffusion Solid Half-Space with Dual-Phase-Lag Models
The present investigation deals with the reflection and transmission phenomenon due to incident plane longitudinal wave at a plane interface between inviscid fluid half-space and a thermoelastic diffusion solid half-space with dual-phase-lag heat transfer (DPLT) and dual-phase-lag diffusion (DPLD) models. The theory of thermoelasticity with dual-phase-lag heat transfer developed by Roychoudhar...
متن کاملPrinciples and Methodology of Intervention for Structural Restoration
We use the term structural restoration for those interventions that are carried out on monuments in order to restore the bearing capacity of the whole or of parts that have structural problems. Most of the structural problems of the Acropolis monuments are due to the cracking and splintering of the marble caused by the rusting of the extensive iron reinforced elements that had been inserted dur...
